Educators are innovators. Children are too.
The start of our story takes place in 2014 when PhoenX discovered a profound connection with Dr. Maria Montessori’s educational philosophy. Dr. Montessori, the first woman in Italy to obtain a medical degree, is renowned for her pedagogical approach that resonates with the natural learning patterns of children. Inspired by Dr. Montessori’s principles, PhoenX embarked on a journey into higher education, focusing on early childhood development.
During a course on Children’s Literature, an important lesson took hold: the significance of children recognizing themselves in the narratives of books, stories, and media they engage with. This insight ignited a dual passion within PhoenX—an advocacy for both education and representation. This, along with the ambition to nurture a global citizen rather than a child with solely American perspectives, became the inception of her homeschooling journey.
In 2018, PhoenX's journey brought her to a teaching role at a Montessori School in Long Island, NY, where she had the unique and cherished opportunity to teach her own daughter alongside other students. By 2020, when presented with the opportunity to teach additional students alongside her daughter, her response stemmed from a deep-seated belief: “If I can, then I should.”
During this time, extraordinary success stories were unfolding at The Montessori Attic. One example in particular example took place in the middle of the pandemic. A family joined The Montessori Attic wanting something different for their two children. The children thrived in the environment that PhoenX was able to create. As the mask restrictions began lifting, their parents decided to transition the children to public school. To the teachers’ amazement, the students were performing way beyond grade level and were able to recognize them as "Montessori Kids."
The Montessori Attic was conceived in 2020, initially as a modest homeschool co-op that rotated through various families’ rooms. Its gatherings eventually ascended to the attic of PhoenX’s own home, which inspired the name The Montessori Attic. As 2021 drew to a close, the growing need for a dedicated space became clear, leading to the establishment of a permanent site for The Montessori Attic.
Today, The Montessori Attic stands as a proud homeschool haven, committed to serving families in their educational journey. We strive to provide a serene environment, designed with learning and comfort in mind and also global in its Montessori educational scope. Our goal is to ensure that children have ongoing access to superior learning resources and empowered to embrace their individuality.
